Showers and thunderstorms will affect the Desert Southwest once again today and possibly into Thursday. These showers could produce locally heavy rain at times and lead to flash flooding across areas already saturated from rain this week. WPC has issued a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall across central and southern Arizona, as well as far southeastern California. Flash Flood Watches have also been issued here. Another area that could see heavy rain and flash flooding is across the Ozarks from northeast Oklahoma to northern Arkansas. A cold front approaching from the Midwest and Central Plains will interact with abundant moisture and spark storms across the region. A general 1 to 2 inches of rain is forecast, with locally higher amounts. Elsewhere, a cold front will push across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley today before swinging through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Thursday night. Ahead of the cold front high temperatures will reach the 80s across the Northeast and 90s in the Southeast/Mid-Atlantic. This equates to temperatures around 5 to 15 degrees above average. A few daily high temperature records could fall across the Southeast on Thursday. Another area seeing summer-like heat will be across coastal California and the Central Valley. Heat advisories have been issued here, as well as Red Flag warnings due to the potential for elevated fire weather. Cooler and below average temperatures will be found across the Northern Plains and Northwest through Friday morning. An area of low pressure and associated cold front will push through the region Thursday and Friday morning. As it does so it will bring the chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms from the northern High Plains to the Midwest. A few snow showers will be possible across portions of the Northern Rockies. Snell Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
