Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 337 PM EDT Fri Oct 11 2019 Valid 00Z Sat Oct 12 2019 - 00Z Mon Oct 14 2019 ...Major October snowstorm continues across parts of the Northern Plains... ...Extremely critical fire weather conditions continue this evening across parts of Southern California... ...Subtropical Storm Melissa impacting the Mid-Atlantic and New England coastline with showers and rough surf... An early season major winter storm continues across the Northern Plains tonight as an anomalously cold air mass remains centered over the Central United States. Heavy snowfall across the Northern Plains will continue tonight into Saturday as the storm system will very slowly exit the region. The heaviest axis of additional snowfall should focus across north-central North Dakota, where an additional foot of snow is expected. Strong and gusty winds will accompany this system resulting in blowing snow and dangerous travel. Blizzard warnings are in effect across this region. A very cold air mass has spread across the Western and Central U.S., and widespread record lows remain likely again on Saturday morning for many locations from the Southern/Central Plains to the Great Basin. Widespread Freeze Warnings and Watches are in effect from the Upper Midwest to the Southern Plains. Along and ahead of the cold front from the Lower Great Lakes to the Florida Panhandle, scattered showers are possible on Saturday. By Sunday the front is forecast to stall across the Southeast and could bring much need rainfall to areas experiencing extreme drought. Meanwhile, a low pressure system lingering off the Northeast coast has formed into Subtropical Storm Melissa. This system will continue to bring scattered showers and gusty winds to extreme southeastern New England on Saturday. Rough surf and coastal flooding will be possible along the East Coast until the storm moves farther out to sea on Sunday. Out West, critical to extremely critical fire weather conditions will continue this evening across portions of southern California due to gusty winds and a very dry airmass. These conditions are forecast subside by the weekend as an upper level trough approaches the region. Snell Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
