Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 351 PM EDT Sun Oct 27 2019 Valid 00Z Mon Oct 28 2019 - 00Z Wed Oct 30 2019 ...Heavy snow for the Central Rockies/High Plains... ...Critical to extreme fire weather threat over parts of Northern to Southern California and parts of the Southwest... ...Temperatures will be 20 to 35 degrees below average over parts of the Northern/Central Rockies and the High Plains... Cold high pressure over the Northern Rockies will move southeastward to the Central Plains by Tuesday as another cold area of high pressure builds over the Northern Rockies by Tuesday. The cold air will be 20 to 35 degrees below average over parts of the Northern/Central Rockies and the High Plains. Upslope flow associated with the high pressure and a very deep upper-level trough over the West will aid in producing snow over the Central Rockies/High Plains and to a lesser extent over the Northern Rockies through Tuesday evening. The snow will take a short break overnight Monday. When the second high builds in on Tuesday, snow will again spread southward from the Northern Rockies into the Central Rockies through Tuesday evening. Winter Weather Warnings and Advisories are up over Wyoming into Colorado. The associated hazards are travel will be very difficult to impossible due to icy, snow covered roads and low visibilities. In addition, to the snow and cold temperatures the high pressure will produce a very strong pressure gradient over parts of California into the Southwest that will produce strong winds and low humidity over the area. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a critical to extreme risk of fire weather over parts of California into parts of the Southwest through Tuesday. The front associated with the leading edge of the cold air associated with the area of high pressure will move the front into the Great Lakes to the Southern Plains that will be quasi-stationary through Tuesday evening. Some moisture will pool along the front as upper-level energy aids in producing an area of snow and rain over parts of the Central Plains into Middle Mississippi Valley by Monday afternoon. The area of snow and rain will move into the Great Lakes overnight Monday and begin to wane by Tuesday evening. Rain will move into parts of the Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley overnight Monday, too. On Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms will develop over parts of the Western Gulf Coast as rain moves into parts of the Western Ohio Valley. The rain and thunderstorms will continue over parts of the Southern Plains and the Western Gulf Coast through Tuesday evening.
