Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 300 AM EST Sat Nov 09 2019 Valid 12Z Sat Nov 09 2019 - 12Z Mon Nov 11 2019 ...The next surge of arctic air is poised to bring the coldest temperatures so far this season into the northern Plains this weekend... ...Accumulating snow is expected to spread across the northern High Plains this weekend... An arctic high pressure system originating from Siberia will bring the coldest air so far this season into the eastern two-thirds of the country. The leading edge of the cold air will dip slowly southward into the northern Plains today. Mild temperatures ahead of the arctic front will be replaced by rapidly falling temperatures, winds shifting to the north and northeast, along with snow developing and intensifying across the northern High Plains this evening. The snow will then spread eastward into the northern Plains on Sunday as the expansive area of high pressure continues to push southward and feeds more arctic air from Canada. Actual temperatures are forecast to dip below zero degrees by Monday morning over the northern High Plains as the snow gradually tapers off. Farther south across the central Plains, temperatures will be quite warm today well ahead of the arctic front. However, as the front arrives, temperatures will fall rapidly below freezing Sunday night along with rain changing to snow or mixed precipitation across the central Plains. Much of Florida will see rain from the previous cold front gradually tapering off from north to south today into tonight. Fine weather is expected to prevail across much of the East Coast, the Deep South, and the mid-section of the country through this weekend as the widespread cold conditions gradually moderate. Lake-effect rain and snow showers are expected to persist through the weekend over the Great Lakes. In contrast, dry and warmer than average conditions will continue across much of the western U.S. with elevated fire danger over portions of southern California as well as parts of the central High Plains today.
