Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 157 PM EST Wed Nov 27 2019 Valid 00Z Thu Nov 28 2019 - 00Z Sat Nov 30 2019 ...No let up to the active weather pattern across the nation Holiday travel issues will continue into the weekend... The weather pattern remains in a very active mode going into the Thanksgiving holiday and holiday weekend. Widespread Winter weather, flash flood and wind watches, warnings and advisories are currently in effect from the National Weather Service across large portions of the nation. The lead storm system that has produce widespread heavy snows from the Central Rockies into the Upper Great Lakes will be winding down across the Upper Lakes tonight, focusing most of its precipitation across northern New York State into New England tonight into Thanksgiving day. Snowfall accumulation are not expected to be as great across northern New England compared to what has occurred across the mid section of the nation, with snowfall totals of 4-6 inches possible across portions of northern New Hampshire into northern Maine. In the wake of this storm moving off the New England coast on Thursday, the very windy conditions that are currently affecting the Mid West will be pushing eastward, with very windy conditions likely on Thanksgiving across much of the Northeast along with much cooler temperatures compared to the previous days. The western area of low pressure that roared ashore Tuesday evening has weakened as it moved inland into central Oregon Wednesday afternoon. While the system has weakened, it remains a very large system with impacts expected across a large portion of the nation to the west of the Rockies over the next several days. Heavy snows are likely for the end of the work week through the Sierra, the Transverse and Peninsular Ranges of Southern California, inland across the Great Basin of Nevada, through the Mogollon Rim of Arizona, across the Wasatch and into the Northern Rockies. Snowfall totals across much of these regions likely to be in the 1 to 2 foot range. In addition to the heavy snow potential with the western area of low pressure, heavy rains are also a threat at lower elevations with flash flooding threats for Southern California through Thanksgiving Day, spreading eastward into the Southwest by early Friday morning. Farther to the east, a separate area of precipitation will be drawn northeastward ahead of the western storm across northern Mexico into the Southern High Plains tonight and into the Southern and Central Plain on Thanksgiving. Cold air in place ahead of this area of precipitation will support heavy snow potential across northeast New Mexico into Southwest Colorado, while light to moderate snowfall totals and light ice accumulations are possible from the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandle northeast across large portions of the Central and Northern Plain into the Upper Mississippi Valley.
