A strong storm over the Great Lakes extending into the Northeast will produce heavy snow and rain/freezing rain over parts of the area through Tuesday. Scattered rain/freezing rain will develop over parts of the Northern Mid-Atlantic overnight Sunday that will migrate into Southern New England on Monday. The snow will slowly wind down over the Great Lakes overnight Sunday as rain over the Ohio Valley changes over to snow. On Monday, the snow over the Ohio Valley will slowly wind down. In contrast, snow will develop over the Central Appalachians overnight Sunday that will continue through Tuesday morning with the snow heavy at times. Snow will develop over parts of the Northeast on Sunday evening into Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, rain over parts of the Mid-Atlantic will move off the Mid-Atlantic Coast by Monday afternoon. Severe travel disruptions are likely for many of these areas over the Northeast into the Great Lakes with this storm. Upper-level low just off the Pacific Northwest/Northern California Coast will move southwestward to 34.5 N 129.5 W by Tuesday morning before the low begins to move eastward to 33.7 N 127.3 W by Tuesday evening. The system will direct a plume of moisture into the Central California Coast through Monday evening when the plume becomes more tangential to the coast overnight Monday into Tuesday evening. The system will produce heavy rain and heavy snow at highest elevations over parts of Central/Northern California through Tuesday. The heavy rain will aid in producing scattered flash flooding which will be mainly localized with burn scares being more vulnerable through Tuesday. The snow levels will rise during the period but snow amounts will be significant, likewise, through Tuesday. Lighter snow will likely reach farther east across the Intermountain West on Sunday.
