Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 256 AM EST Mon Dec 2 2019 Valid 12Z Mon Dec 2 2019 - 12Z Wed Dec 4 2019 ...Big winter storm has now reached the Northeast U.S. with heavy inland snow... The trans-continental storm system that has hammered the western and central U.S. over the past week with heavy snow and strong winds has now reached the Northeast U.S. as of Monday morning. This is producing a variety of impactful winter weather conditions to begin the work week, ranging from heavy snow over interior portions of the northern Mid-Atlantic and New England, to a wintry mix closer to the Interstate 95 corridor. Winter storm warnings remain in effect from northeast Pennsylvania to southern Maine, with storm total snowfall of 10 to 20 inches for some of these locations by Tuesday morning. Upslope snow across the central Appalachians could also be heavy at times, and winter storm warnings are also in effect from western North Carolina to eastern West Virginia. This will likely lead to major travel disruptions across these areas. Conditions are improving farther to the west across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes as the low pressure system moves away from this region. Across the West Coast, a slow moving storm over the eastern Pacific will have an influence across California as a plume of moisture advects inland. Periods of rain and heavy snow across the Sierra Nevada can be expected through Tuesday, adding to the heavy precipitation that has been observed recently. There is the potential for some isolated flooding concerns near the central California coast where additional rainfall may exceed 1 inch, particularly across any burn scar areas. Lighter snow will likely reach farther east towards northern Nevada and Idaho. Dry conditions are expected across the Plains and southern tier states.
