Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 248 AM EST Tue Dec 3 2019 Valid 12Z Tue Dec 3 2019 - 12Z Thu Dec 5 2019 ...Major winter storm now beginning to abate as it exits the Northeast U.S. by Wednesday... The major winter storm that has made it trans-continental journey across the U.S. is now beginning to make its exit from eastern New England. However, there is still one more day of impactful winter weather to get through on Tuesday across Maine, New Hampshire, and eastern Massachusetts, with 6 to 10 inches of additional snow across eastern Maine before finally tapering off late Tuesday night. Winter storm warnings are in effect for these areas, and winter weather advisories farther to the west. After the storm departs, strong cold air advection over the Great Lakes will generate bands of lake effect snow, with the heaviest snowfall likely downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario on Wednesday. Additional moisture from the Pacific will fuel additional rainfall across California through midweek, and moderate to heavy snow for the central Sierra Nevada. Snow showers are likely across the higher terrain of central Nevada, Utah, and western Colorado as the upper level low from the Pacific moves inland across the Desert Southwest. Elsewhere across the continental U.S., dry conditions can be expected from the western High Plains to the Southeast U.S. over the next couple of days as high pressure governs the overall weather pattern. Temperatures are generally expected to be slightly below normal across the eastern third of the nation, and near to above normal for the Plains and western states.
