Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 259 PM EST Sun Jan 19 2020 Valid 00Z Mon Jan 20 2020 - 00Z Wed Jan 22 2020 ...Winter in control of the Eastern U.S. with well below normal temperatures and mostly dry conditions through Tuesday... ...Storm system to usher in rain and mountain snow to the Northwest early week... As the weekend winter storm tracks east into the northwest Atlantic, drier conditions and cold temperatures will engulf much of the eastern U.S. tonight and continue through the first half of the week. Frigid daily low temperatures that dip below zero will be common across the Northern Plains and Midwest Monday morning. By Tuesday and Wednesday, some of the more anomalously cold conditions will be centered in the Southeast where sub-freezing temperatures will extend as far south as north-central Florida. On average, much of the eastern half of the country will see temperatures anomalies range between 10 to 20 degrees below normal. Look for lake effect snow showers to persist overnight and into Monday morning. The first in a pair of low pressure systems will approach the Northwest resulting in light rain and some higher elevation snow in the Cascades on Monday. As this system dissipates offshore tomorrow, a second but more potent storm will send a large plume of moisture will reach the West Coast late Monday into Tuesday. Periods of rain will be common in the lower elevations of the Pacific Northwest and northern California while mountain snow falls across the Cascades and northern Sierra Nevada. This storm will work in tandem with a separate storm system west of Mexico to usher in Pacific moisture across the Southwest and the Rockies on Tuesday, leading to scattered showers and some mountain snow in the regions.
