Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 300 PM EST Wed Jan 29 2020 Valid 00Z Thu Jan 30 2020 - 00Z Sat Feb 01 2020 ...Unsettled weather continues for the Pacific Northwest into the northern Rockies... ...Rain across the eastern Gulf states expected to move off the southeast U.S. coast Thursday afternoon... ...Showers resume along the Gulf Coast on Friday and then expand toward the southeast U.S. Friday evening... An active Pacific jet stream will continue to keep unsettled weather in the forecast for the Pacific Northwest through Friday. The most recent batch of moisture associated with a frontal system is expected to spread eastward across the Intermountain West tonight, and then across the northern Rockies and northern High Plains on Thursday in the form light snow for the mountains and areas of mixed precipitation for the lower elevations. By Thursday night into Friday, the next wave of moisture ahead of another frontal system is expected to overspread the Pacific Northwest once again with moderate to heavy snow over the northern Cascades, while moderate to heavy rain is expected for the lower elevations down to the immediate coasts. Meanwhile, scattered light snow and mixed precipitation is expected to move into the upper Midwest. Further south, a low pressure system centered near the eastern Gulf Coast is forecast to bring rain across much of the southeastern U.S including Florida through tonight. This system is expected to move relatively quickly eastward out into the Atlantic, ending much of the rain across the Southeast by Thursday afternoon. Temperature-wise, milder than normal conditions are expected to continue across the Northern Tier in contrast with cooler than normal conditions for the Deep South under a split flow pattern. As the aforementioned low pressure system departs, the southern jet stream will act to develop another low pressure wave along a front near the Gulf Coast. Rain showers will quickly resume along the western Gulf Coast Thursday night, which will quickly expand eastward through the rest of the Deep South and into the Southeast on Friday, leading to wet, dreary, and cool conditions region-wide. In addition, showers and some thunderstorms are possible over the southern High Plains on Thursday. Kong Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
