Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 354 AM EDT Sat Apr 18 2020 Valid 12Z Sat Apr 18 2020 - 12Z Mon Apr 20 2020 ...Widespread flash flooding and severe weather are expected this weekend, especially Sunday, across the Lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast... A frontal boundary meandering across the Southern Plains to Southeast will be a focus for thunderstorms over the next couple of days. Today, potentially strong to severe thunderstorms, along with locally heavy rain and flash flooding are forecast for eastern portions of Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley. A Slight Risk for severe weather is also in place across portions of Florida. The flash flooding and severe threats are expected to ramp up on Sunday, with an Enhanced Risk of severe weather in place for tornadoes, high winds, and hail across the Lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast. A Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall/flash flooding is outlooked for those areas as well, as over 3 inches of rain could fall over areas that have received above normal rainfall over the past few weeks, exacerbating the flooding and flash flooding threats. Elsewhere, snow and rain showers will wind down early today across the Northeast as a low pressure system pulls away into the Atlantic. Light to moderate precipitation is forecast for the Northwest to north-central U.S. behind a cold front, and snowfall of a few inches is possible in the Northern Rockies. The Four Corners region could also receive a couple rounds of light precipitation over the next couple of days. Temperature-wise, cooler than normal temperatures are forecast from the Plains to the Northeast on Saturday, as a cold front drops into the Northern High Plains, causing cool temperatures there as well. Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories are in place for this morning across portions of the Plains, Mississippi Valley, and Ohio Valley. On Sunday, warmth will rebound into Texas as the warm front lifts northeastward. The Florida peninsula should remain warm through the weekend.
