The first weekend of May will bring above average temperatures across a large section of the nation. The core of the warmest temperatures will be from the Desert Southwest into the Southern High Plains where mid to upper 90s are likely. The high temperatures may reach record levels both Saturday and Sunday over the Southern High Plains. The hot temperatures, low relative humidities and gusty winds over portions of the Southwest and Southern High Plains will lead to an elevated Fire Weather Risk over the next two days across these areas. In contrast to the warm dry conditions, a frontal boundary moving inland into the Pacific Northwest Saturday and into the Northern Rockies on Sunday will produce widespread heavy precipitation from the Washington-Oregon Cascades westward to the coast and over the Northern Rockies. Temperatures across these area are expected to be below average this weekend. The recent wet weather across the eastern U.S. will come to an end Friday evening/night as the storm system over New England pushes east into the Canadian Maritimes. Additional moderate to locally heavy precipitation possible this weekend in the vicinity of a frontal boundary stretching from the Central Plains into the Mid Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, Central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic.
