A chilly, blustery, and wintry Saturday is on tap across the Great Lakes and Northeast today while temperatures feel more like March across the South. Numerous Freeze Watches, Warnings, and Frost Advisories are in effect this morning from the Midwest to the Northeast. Record low max and min temperatures are expected across much of the East today with the potential for more record lows in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Mother's Day morning. In addition to the cold, a rapidly developing coastal low is going to make for a snowy day in Maine where Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in place. Scattered rain and snow showers are also possible across the Northeast and eastern Great Lakes throughout the day Saturday. The cold weather refuses to back down in the Midwest and northern High Plains on Mother's Day as yet another round of brisk and March-like temperatures takes hold of these regions in wake of a passing cold front. This cold front is forecast to reinforce the abnormally cold air-mass in the eastern U.S. to kick-off the upcoming week. While moms in the East try to stay warm, moms in the West will bask a more summer-like temperature regime this weekend. Record high max and min temperatures are possible up and down the West Coast today with many seeing high temps soar into the 80s and 90s. Mother's Day will feature slightly less intense heat across the western third of the U.S. but still range between 10 and 20 degrees above normal. Temperatures should finally cool to more seasonal levels as a Pacific storm system rolls into the West Coast on Monday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop over the Northern Plains and Midwest later today with some light snow possible portions of North Dakota and the Upper Mississippi Valley. This storm system will then head for the Great Lakes on Mother's Day making for a wet and cloudy day for moms from the Midwest to the Ohio Valley. Some thunderstorms could be severe in the Lower Great Lakes Sunday afternoon. The chance for showers will push into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Monday with some snowfall possible in the central Appalachians. To the south, Mother's Day is likely to be a wet one in South Florida as moisture streams along a stalled frontal boundary overhead. Thunderstorms in South Florida on Sunday could be severe and produce heavy downpours. Mullinax Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
