Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 357 PM EDT Fri May 22 2020 Valid 00Z Sat May 23 2020 - 00Z Mon May 25 2020 ...Rain and thunderstorms expected across the Plains, with severe weather and flash flooding both possible... ...Showers, mountain snow, and below-average temperatures from the Northwest into the Northern Rockies... ...Critical fire weather forecast for the Four Corners to the Southern High Plains... A strong cold front will continue to advance through the western U.S., with well-below normal temperatures shifting east across the Great Basin and northern Rockies through the weekend. Precipitation will continue to spread east across the northern Rockies late Friday into Saturday, including significant snow across the southwestern Montana and western Wyoming ranges. As the system moves into the Plains, showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop over the northern and central Plains on Saturday, with some storms expected to become strong to severe. In addition to severe wind and hail, heavy rain is also possible, especially across the western Dakotas. Strong to severe thunderstorms may also develop farther to the south ahead of a dryline extending from the Texas Panhandle into West Texas. Dry, windy conditions are expected along the trailing end of the front as it moves through the southern Great Basin into the Southwest -- supporting elevated to critical fire weather conditions from the Four Corners region to the southern High Plains on Saturday. In the East, low pressure over the southern Mid-Atlantic states will finally begin to lift out of the region -- bringing a good chance for rain into the northern Mid-Atlantic states, southern New York and New England as it moves north through early Saturday. Drier conditions can be expected along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast seaboards as the system begins to drift east during the second half of the weekend.
