Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 357 AM EDT Sun May 24 2020 Valid 12Z Sun May 24 2020 - 12Z Tue May 26 2020 ...Severe weather and flash flooding expected across the Plains into the Middle Mississippi Valley... ...Cool temperatures and mountain snow continue for the Northern and Central Rockies today... ...Heavy rain forecast for Florida... A well-defined but slow-moving cold front will continue advancing across the Plains and Four Corners region through the remainder of Memorial Day weekend. Ahead of this front, warmer than average temperatures and sufficient moisture should lead to scattered to widespread thunderstorms across the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Today, a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms is in place from the Southern/Central Plains into the Middle/Upper Mississippi Valley, and very large hail is a threat. Slight Risks of excessive rainfall/flash flooding are also in effect for the Central Plains to Middle Mississippi Valley and for parts of Texas today. Tomorrow, heavy rainfall causing flash flooding is expected for the Southern Plains, with widespread rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts. Behind this cold front, high temperatures are forecast to be 10 to 20 degrees below average over the Northern/Central Rockies and High Plains today. The cold will support a few additional inches of snow for higher elevations of the Northern Rockies today, while snow in the Central Rockies could approach a foot through tonight. Cooler than average temperatures should move southward into the Central/Southern High Plains on Monday as the front progresses. Farther south, elevated fire weather danger remains a threat today for much of New Mexico and eastern Arizona. Additionally, heat is forecast to build in across the West underneath an upper-level ridge beginning on Memorial Day, but increasing substantially closer to midweek. Copious amounts of moisture along with a tropical wave that could produce a surface low will support the development of heavy rainfall across Florida over the next couple of days. Rainfall amounts could be high over the Keys and southern Florida today--over 4 inches are possible. Then potentially heavy rain could extend across much of the peninsula tomorrow. Flood Watches and Slight Risks of excessive rainfall are in place to cover the threat over southern Florida. Tate Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
