Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 PM EDT Sun Jul 12 2020 Valid 00Z Mon Jul 13 2020 - 00Z Wed Jul 15 2020 ...Record breaking heat expected to continue across portions of Texas into Tuesday... ...Another round of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected for the northern and central Plains and Upper Midwest on Monday... ...Critical fire weather conditions are expected for portions of the Great Basin on Monday... As a strong upper level high continues to support above normal temperatures, excessive heat warnings and heat advisories currently stretch across a large portion of the southern U.S. - from Southern California to Alabama. While temperatures are expected to cool a few degrees across Southern California and the Southwest, well above-normal to record-breaking heat is expected to persist across much of Texas into Tuesday. Much cooler weather will follow a cold front from the northern Rockies into the northern Great Plains on Monday. Strong to severe storms are expected to develop along and ahead of this system as it moves across the northern and central Great Plains and into the Upper Midwest on Monday. On Tuesday, expect the better chance for storms to shift farther east along with the front into the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region, while dropping farther south through the central Plains. Along the trailing end of this front - windy, but dry conditions are expected across the Great Basin. This will likely support critical fire weather conditions for the southern and eastern portions of the Great Basin on Monday. Showers and thunderstorms developing this evening over the Ohio and Tennessee valleys are expected to move south and east ahead of a cold front overnight. Showers and storms are expected to develop along the boundary once again on Monday, as it lingers near the East coast. Some of these storms may produce locally heavy rainfall amounts.
