The weekend looks to close on a hot and muggy note from the Plains to the Northeast today. Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings are in place with heat indices ranging from 100 to 110 degrees in these warned areas. Daily record high maximum and warm minimum temperatures could be broken in portions of the Northeast today. In addition, parts of the Desert Southwest will also witness sizzling temperatures as the Phoenix metro area is under an Excessive Heat Warning. A cold front passing through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley tonight will make for slightly more comfortable, yet still summer-like, conditions in these areas while the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic contend with more sizzling temperatures. The aforementioned cold front swings through the Northeast late Monday ushering in a more comfortable air-mass across New England on Tuesday. A cold front passing through the Great Lakes is be responsible for the development thunderstorms today, some of which may become severe. A Slight Risk for severe weather has been issued for the eastern Great Lakes and into the Ohio Valley. Meanwhile, the front is expected to take its time over the Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley both Sunday and Monday, where additional showers and thunderstorms are possible. A Slight Risk of flash flooding is in place for parts of Kansas and Missouri where storms could produce excessive rainfall rates and amounts. Severe weather and heavy rainfall are also possible in the Northern Plains and Black Hills the first half of the week as an upper-level disturbance tracks overhead. Farther east, a frontal boundary is forecast to stall over the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley late Monday and into early Tuesday sparking showers and thunderstorms that could contain locally heavy downpours.
