A front over the Upper Midwest will slowly move toward the Northeast and the Ohio Valley, also sagging toward the southern Plains. Moisture will pool along the boundary, aiding in development of showers and thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms over the Central Plains/Middle Mississippi Valley and Western Ohio Valley. The main hazards will be dangerous lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts and hail. The Weather Prediction Center has also issued a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Middle Mississippi Valley and the Western Ohio Valley. With rich summertime moisture in place, clusters of thunderstorms will produce locally very heavy rainfall over a short time. The heavy rain could result in scattered flash flooding today and tonight. In addition, tropical moisture over the Southeast states and along the central Gulf Coast will give rise to afternoon showers and thunderstorms today and Tuesday. On Tuesday moisture will surge back northward over the Central/Northern Plains, supporting additional rain and thunderstorms there. Expect another hot afternoon for much of the eastern, southern, and western U.S. today. The combination of tempeatures in the 90s and high humidity has prompted heat advisories for parts of the central and eastern U.S. Temperatures also continue above normal in the Southwest, where lately monsoon thunderstorms have been unusually absent. Fire weather conditions remain elevated over parts of the Southwest/Great Basin through Wednesday. Burke/Ziegenfelder Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
