Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 434 AM EDT Mon Sep 21 2020 Valid 12Z Mon Sep 21 2020 - 12Z Wed Sep 23 2020 ...Tropical Storm Beta is forecast to make landfall on the central Texas Coast later on Monday with flooding rains extending northeastward from the center... ...Large swells caused by Teddy could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the East Coast... ...Below-normal temperatures to continue in the East with Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories in effect for portions of the northeastern U.S.... The extremely active Atlantic hurricane season of 2020 continues as the western Gulf Coast expects the landfall of the slow-moving Tropical Storm Beta by tonight in the vicinity of the central Texas coast. Tropical Storm and Storm Surge warnings remain in effect along the Gulf Coast from the middle Texas coast to southwestern Louisiana. Beta is forecast to weaken to a tropical depression on Tuesday as it veers toward the northeast slowly along or just inland from the upper Texas coast. It appears that the heaviest rain will fall Monday night near and northeast of where Beta makes landfall with storm surges near periods of high tide through Tuesday for the coastal communities. Although the general threat of flooding rains is expected to decrease after Beta makes landfall and weakens, the storm's meandering nature near the coast will continue to keep a threat of brief periods of heavy rain along with gusty winds from the upper Texas coast to southern Louisiana Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, some of the heavy rains are forecast to spread northward across eastern Texas, Oklahoma and the lower Mississippi valley over the next few days as the main upper-level dynamics spread inland. In the Atlantic, Hurricane Teddy is expected to transition to a powerful post-tropical cyclone as it aims towards Atlantic Canada on Tuesday. Large swells produced by Teddy are forecast to impact portions of the U.S. East Coast during the next few days. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Gusty winds will also increase Tuesday night, especially across eastern Maine where chilly rain could also develop well ahead of the center of Teddy. Elsewhere, dry conditions are expected through midweek across much of U.S. High pressure, will support another day of below-normal temperatures across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Another round of freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect into the early morning hours today across portions of the Northeast and central Appalachians. Above-normal temperatures are forecast to return to much of the western U.S. today, while well above-normal temperatures are expected to build across the central and northern Plains to the Upper Midwest for the next few days. Gusty winds, in addition to the dry conditions are expected to raise fire weather concerns today across portions of the Great Basin.
