Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 235 AM EST Sun Nov 08 2020 Valid 12Z Sun Nov 08 2020 - 12Z Tue Nov 10 2020 ...Heavy snow over parts of the Sierra, Rocky Mountains and Northern Plains... ...Heavy rain and strong winds to impact southern Florida as Tropical Storm Eta approaches... ...Record or near record warmth continues over the Midwest and Northeast/Mid-Atlantic; record cold expected across California and Great Basin... A potent upper-level low will generate heavy snow over parts of the Sierra, Rockies and Northern Plains today. The heavy snow threat will shift into the Rockies and Northern Plains tomorrow. Up to a foot of snow is possible for the Sierra and Colorado Rockies through Monday, while part of Northern Montana will see up to 2 feet of snow accumulations by Tuesday morning. Cold air will continue to filter into the western U.S. behind this system as high pressure builds over the Pacific Northwest. This cold airmass may lead to record breaking temperatures over parts of California and Nevada through Monday. Meanwhile, record breaking heat is expected to expand over the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic over the next two days as high pressure along the east coast and the approaching low pressure system in the Plains are expected to pull warm air northward. High temperatures are likely to be between 30 and 40 degrees above average for parts of the Upper Midwest and Northeast through Monday. The increased pressure gradient along the foothills of the Central Rockies, caused by the crossing of the previously mentioned area of low pressure, will generate strong winds leading to an Elevated Fire Risk for that area through Monday. Impacts from Tropical Storm Eta are already being felt over the Florida Peninsula as heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds continue over parts of the state. The persistence of heavy rainfall over southern Florida may lead to Flash Flooding through Monday. Over 5 inches of rain is expected to fall across south Florida by Tuesday morning. Strong winds may produce coastal flooding and storm surge across southern Florida as Eta's forecasted track takes it across the Keys over the next 2 days.
