Large parts of the nation will have stormy weather as we say good riddance to 2020 and welcome in the New Year. A strengthening mid to upper level low moving across northern Mexico into the Southern Plains will be the driver for an active weather pattern from the Southern to Central Plains, along the western to central Gulf Coast, through the Lower to Middle Mississippi Valley and across the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, Southern to Central Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic. This mid to upper level flow will push a surface low northward from eastern Texas into the Middle Mississippi Valley Thursday and Friday. A wide variety of weather expected with this storm with heavy snows possible from Southwest Texas into western Oklahoma, eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri. Icing also possible across these areas and eastward into the Middle Mississippi Valley, Mid West and northern Mid Atlantic. On the eastern side of this storm heavy rains and potential flash flooding are on tap from tonight into early New Year's Day from eastern Texas into southeast Oklahoma and much of Arkansas. Farther to the east, severe weather is possible along the Gulf Coast from Texas to the Florida Panhandle. Across the Pacific Northwest into the Northern Rockies, the combination of a storm system moving inland across this region tonight and a second storm moving toward the coast on New Year's Day Friday will produce heavy low elevation rains and heavy mountain snows across this area.
