Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 201 PM EST Mon Jan 04 2021 Valid 00Z Tue Jan 05 2021 - 00Z Thu Jan 07 2021 ...Heavy precipitation continues to impact northern California, the Pacific Northwest, and into the northern/central Rockies... ...Light snow is forecast for the northern/central Plains Tuesday night into Wednesday... An active weather pattern to start the new year will continue across much of the Pacific Northwest through the middle of this week. Heavy precipitation is currently impacting areas from northern California to Washington. Another round of coastal rain/mountain snow is forecast to enter the region Tuesday night into Wednesday, resulting in an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow across the Olympic and Cascade mountains, as well as parts of the northern Rockies. Rainfall amounts up to 3 inches will be found along the immediate Washington and Oregon coastline. By Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, a weak low pressure system will support light snow across the northern Plains. Meanwhile, return moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will begin to fuel thunderstorms across eastern Texas ahead of a cold front and a developing warm front early on Wednesday. Chances for light snow will shift south into the central Plains by Wednesday afternoon. Across the eastern U.S., much quieter weather is in store over the next few days. Very light snow showers will be possible across the Great Lakes, Northeast, and central Appalachians. Otherwise, temperatures are forecast to be right around normal for this time of year with cooler than average temperatures found across Florida and the Southeast.
