Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 1122 AM EST Fri Jan 08 2021 Valid 00Z Sat Jan 09 2021 - 00Z Mon Jan 11 2021 An area of low pressure will move off the Southeast coast today as it produces rain across the coastal plains while heavy snowfall continues over parts of the Southern Appalachians and adjacent North Carolina Piedmont into tonight, where Winter Storm Advisories and Warnings are in effect. Cold temperatures are expected in its wake across the Southeast. A cold front crossing the West will deposit some snow as it drops through the Great Basin. A new surface low pressure system will develop over New Mexico and drop down the Rio Grande into the western Gulf of Mexico, escorted by an amplifying upper-level trough diving southward through the Central/Southern Rockies on Saturday and Sunday. Snow will spread across New Mexico and Texas on Saturday and Sunday, some of which could be heavy, as the upper-level energy moves across the area, possibly impacting some locations that had accumulating snow during the closing days of 2020. Heavy rains are possible late on Sunday along portions of the Texas coast as the low moves into the westernmost Gulf of Mexico. Another cold front weakens as it moves through the Northwest on Sunday. Coastal rains and mountain/interior snows are expected with this system, though amounts are not expected to be significant. Roth Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
