Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 259 AM EST Sun Jan 17 2021 Valid 12Z Sun Jan 17 2021 - 12Z Tue Jan 19 2021 ...Strong and potentially damaging winds expected across a large portion of California beginning late Sunday and continuing into Tuesday... ...Additional periods of snow expected from the Ohio valley into the central and southern Appalachians... ...Lake effect snows to continue, with locally heavy amounts possible east of Erie and Ontario... A weak area of low pressure and its associated cold front will move across the northern Rockies into the High Plains, producing widespread light to moderate snows across the region on Sunday into Monday. While widespread heavy snow accumulations are not expected, slippery roads along with blowing snow and reduced visibilities may make travel difficult at times. Strong northerly and easterly winds are expected to develop across Northern California into Central California later today and continue into Tuesday. Downed trees and power lines, as well as difficult driving conditions can be expected -- prompting widespread High Wind Watches and Wind Advisories across the region. By late Monday, damaging winds are forecast to develop farther to the south across portions of Southern California as well. A developing area of low pressure along the coast could start to spread some beneficial precipitation across Southern California into the Southwest beginning early Tuesday. Across the Midwest and eastern U.S., an upper level system moving into the Ohio valley is expected to produce additional periods of snow from the Ohio valley into the central and southern Appalachians on Sunday. Lake effect snow showers will continue in the lee of the lakes, with locally heavy amounts possible, especially downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario.
