Significant Snow and Ice (rain/freezing rain) Accumulation Potential across portions of the Central Plains and Midwest through Tuesday morning... ...Moderate to Heavy rain possible over the Middle Mississippi/Ohio Valleys into the Tennessee Valley through Tuesday morning... A front passing through the Great Lakes region will dissipate today, as well as, the associated snowfall. Light accumulations through the evening hours are expected. A low pressure system lifting though the Southern and Central Plains will allow snow to spread out across the central U.S., spanning from Nebraska/Kansas to parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic regions. Snow accumulations exceeding 4" are expected from Central Kansas through Southern Michigan. Locally higher amounts exceeding 12" are possible across northern Kansas, northwest Missouri, southeast Nebraska, and southern Iowa. Some of the snow will be very heavy with snowfall rates up to 2"/hr; however, snowfall's exact location is still uncertain. There will be a narrow swath from the Plains to the northern Mid-Atlantic where temperatures will hover near freezing, which may get a wintry mix of precipitation with possible accumulating ice up to 0.10 inch with a few localized maximums of 0.25 inch possible. Travel may quickly become hazardous across portions of this region. A little further south with this system, scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected. Periods of moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected and WPC has identified parts of the Mid-Mississippi Valley, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys and the Central Appalachians as having a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall and flash flooding. This front will continue to track east across the Gulf states and the Southeast through the middle of the week. A low pressure system tracking across the Southwest today will spread snow to much of the Great Basin, Four Corners and Central Rockies region through Tuesday before it exits the Southern Rockies into the Southern Plains. For the West, the rain and snow will wane over most of the Pacific Northwest and California. However, the snow will continue over the Sierra-Nevada Mountains through Tuesday morning. The snow and lower elevation rain will continue over parts of the Southwest, Great Basin, and Central/Southern Rockies on Tuesday. More snow develops over parts of the Central Plains on Tuesday evening. Another system will advance toward the Pacific Northwest by Tuesday evening, ushering in another round of lower elevation rain and mountain snow.
