Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 322 PM EST Tue Nov 09 2021 Valid 00Z Wed Nov 10 2021 - 00Z Fri Nov 12 2021 ...Persistent rain and higher elevation snow chances for the Pacific Northwest and Rockies... ...Storm system to bring rain, thunderstorms, and a wintry mix to the eastern half of the country.... ...Seasonably warm weather forecast for the East and South, with elevated fire weather conditions for portions of the Southern Plains Wednesday... Rain and higher elevation snow showers will continue for the Central and Northern Rockies as a storm system continues through the region. Accumulations should generally remain light overall. However, some of the mountains in southwestern Montana, northwestern Wyoming, and north-central Colorado will see a few inches of snow through Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, another series of storm systems will begin to impact the Pacific Northwest Wednesday into Thursday bringing additional heavy rain and mountain snow as an atmospheric river helps usher in increased moisture across the region. A Marginal Risk of Excessive Rainfall is in effect Thursday for the chance of 1-3 + inches of rain and rain rates potentially exceeding 0.5 inches per hour. A few lingering showers may continue along a frontal boundary from the Northeast southwest through the Southern Plains overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. However, precipitation will increase significantly as the storm system currently moving through the Rockies continues into the Plains Wednesday and intensifies as it moves east across the country. Widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely ahead of a cold front moving into the Midwest and Southern Plains Wednesday and sweeping eastward into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Southeast on Thursday. A warm front moving up the East Coast will also help increase rain and thunderstorm chances for the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic on Thursday. Colder air surging southward on the back side of the system will lead to a wintry mix of rain and snow for the Northern Plains and Midwest Wednesday night into Thursday. Ahead of the cold front, seasonably warm high temperatures are forecast for the East and South. Highs on Wednesday and Thursday will generally be in the 50s and 60s in the Northeast and Midwest, the 70s in the Southeast, and into the 80s for Texas, all around 5-10 degrees above normal. The warm weather will continue ahead of the front for the East on Thursday as temperatures behind the front drop into the 40s in the Upper Midwest, 50s in the Central Plains, and 60s in the Southern Plains. In addition to the seasonably warm temperatures, dry and breezy conditions ahead of the cold front across southeastern New Mexico and southwest Texas have prompted an Elevated Risk of fire weather from the Storm Prediction Center for Wednesday.
