Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 300 PM EST Mon Jan 10 2022 Valid 00Z Tue Jan 11 2022 - 00Z Thu Jan 13 2022 ...A cold snap in the eastern U.S. will be followed by expansion of mild air across the northern and central Plains... ...Relatively dry couple of days for much of the country but unsettled weather across the Pacific Northwest and lake-effect snows near the Great Lakes... Following the passage of a cold front, much of the eastern two-thirds of the country will enter a period of cold but dry weather for the next couple of days. The core of the cold air will move over the Great Lakes toward New England into Tuesday morning with sub-zero air temperatures expected. This will promote lake-effect snow to develop downwind from the Great Lakes through tonight. Meanwhile, mild air developing near the foothills of the northern and central Rockies is forecast to expand eastward into the Plains behind a warm front. The influx of milder will gradually taper off the lake-effect snow machine later on Tuesday into Wednesday over the Great Lakes. In contrast, the core of the frigid air will move over northern England on Tuesday where daytime highs are forecast to remain below zero at the coldest locations. A large area of high pressure will bring dry conditions for much of the central and eastern U.S. The exception will be across southern Florida where showers and some thunderstorms associated with the aforementioned cold front will linger into Wednesday as the front becomes stationary just to the south. For the Pacific Northwest, another round of active weather is moving into western Washington ahead of a low pressure system. Periods of heavier rain will then enter the region on Tuesday, which could spawn flooding concerns. A Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall has been issued for Tuesday across the Olympic Peninsula, where several inches or more of rain falling on saturated terrain could produce rapid runoff, river flooding, and a risk of landslides. Meanwhile, mountain snow is expected to be confined to the highest peaks of the northern Cascades. East of the Cascades, pockets of freezing rain are possible on Tuesday throughout the Columbia Basin. Kong Graphics are available at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
