Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 238 PM EST Mon Jan 24 2022 Valid 00Z Tue Jan 25 2022 - 00Z Thu Jan 27 2022 ...Periods of light to moderate snow spreading across the Great Lakes and Northeast... ...Low pressure system continues to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast tonight; reaches Florida Peninsula on Tuesday... ...Cold air intrusion expands from Northern Plains and Upper Midwest into the South and East through Wednesday; Warm air expands across Northern/Central Plains beginning Tuesday night... The second in a series of fast-moving low pressure waves from Alberta Canada is tracking across the Great Lakes this afternoon. This Alberta clipper will bring a quick round of light to moderate snow from the Great Lakes through New England tonight into Tuesday. Up to a few inches of snow can be expected in these areas through tonight, but higher amounts are possible downwind of the Great Lakes due to lake-effect enhancements. Southwesterly winds developing ahead of the clipper will moderate the arctic air mass that settled across the southern and eastern U.S.. Meanwhile, a closed upper-level low/trough tracking eastward into southern Texas will induce a low pressure system to form just off the Texas coast tonight. This system will tap into Gulf moisture and track quickly eastward, bringing a round of showers and some thunderstorms from west to east through the Gulf Coast tonight into Tuesday before reaching the Florida Peninsula. The heaviest rainfall is forecast to stay just off the coast. Farther to the north, a shortwave impulse will dive down the spine of the Rockies tonight into Tuesday. This bit of energy will trigger snow showers from the Rockies into western Kansas with heavier snow likely over the higher elevations. Meanwhile, the Northern and Central Plains will experience a drastic cool down tonight in the wake of the cold front associated with the Alberta Clipper. Air temperatures will be in the negative teens and twenties for much of Minnesota and North Dakota tonight with wind chills potentially reaching -40 degrees in come places. Wind Chill Advisories and Warnings are in effect for much of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest tonight. This cold airmass will spread into the Midwest and Northeast by Wednesday with high temperatures not making it out of the teens over parts of the Interior Northeast. High temperatures will be much below normal over much of western Texas into eastern New Mexico as well on Wednesday.
