Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 335 PM EDT Fri Jul 01 2022 Valid 00Z Sat Jul 02 2022 - 00Z Mon Jul 04 2022 ...Wet weather, isolated Flash Flooding and Severe thunderstorms possible across the Southeast quarter of the nation and from the Central to Northern Plains into the Northern Rockies, Northwest and from portions of the Southwest into the Southern Rockies... ...Cooler than average temperature expected from the West Coast inland through the Great Basin and Northern Rockies, while warmer than average temperatures are expected from the Plains into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and Great Lakes... ...Fire Weather conditions will continue across the Great Basin this weekend... It is expected to be a fairly active thunderstorm pattern across large areas of the Lower 48 over the Independence Day holiday weekend in the vicinity of a surface frontal boundary stretching nearly from coast to coast. This frontal boundary will be the focus for thunderstorms over the next few days, with locally heavy rains, isolated flash flooding and severe thunderstorms possible. However, much of this expected precipitation over the next few days will not be falling across areas of the west that are mired in extreme to exceptional long term drought conditions. One exception to this will be over portions of the Southwest into the Southern Rockies where monsoonal thunderstorm activity is expected to continue. The expected continued dry conditions across the west will also support a wild fire threat across these areas. The greatest threat will be across the Great Basin, stretching across much of Nevada, western Utah and northwest Arizona. A strong cold front forming across the western U.S. on Saturday will be pushing inland into the Great Basin and Northern Rockies Sunday into Monday. Much cooler temperatures expected behind this front with high temperatures 10 or more degrees below average along the immediate west coast on Saturday and spreading across the Great Basin and Northern Rockies Sunday into Monday. Below average temperatures also expected over the next two days in areas of active showers and thunderstorms from the Southwest, Southern Rockies and across much of the southeast quarter of the nation. Warmer than average temperatures expected over the next few days through much of the Plains into the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley and Lower Great Lakes. However, few if any record highs or lows are expected through the holiday weekend across the Lower 48. Oravec Graphics are available at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
