Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 818 PM EDT Fri Aug 05 2022 Valid 12Z Sat Aug 06 2022 - 12Z Mon Aug 08 2022 ...Monsoonal rainfall in the Western region ahead of an advancing frontal boundary, with the threat shifting southeastward on Saturday ... ...Much needed relief from the heat and humdity in the Northern Plains this weekend behind an advancing cold front... ...Unsettled weather will continue in the Northeast as a slow-moving frontal boundary triggers showers and thunderstorms... A frontal boundary draped across the Intermountain West will continue to usher in below-average temperatures throughout the Western Region, with high temperatures falling 5 to 15 degrees F short of normal this weekend. South of the boundary, heavy monsoonal rainfall is possible in the Great Basin as moisture-laden air surges northward, triggering showers and thunderstorms that could lead to flash flooding. The heavy rainfall risk will shift southeastward through the weekend into the Four Corners region and southern portions of Arizona and New Mexico as the frontal system progresses eastward. Prior to the arrival of the aforementioned frontal boundary in the Plains, temperatures are forecast to soar into the upper 90s to low 100s across the central Plains and Midwest, leading to the issuance of expansive Heat Advisories in the region. Further north and west, the cold front is forecast to usher in much-needed relief from the heat and humidity on Saturday and Sunday as temperatures struggle to make it out of the mid 70s. However, the potential for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms exists along the boundary, as warm, moist air surging northward clashes with cooler air behind the cold front. As a result, a Slight Risk for Excessive Rainfall has been issued in the Days 2 & 3 timeframe. Unsettled weather is forecast to continue in the Northeast through Saturday, as a slow-moving cold front remains the focus for convection and isolated heavy rainfall, with the boundary eventually weakening and pushing northward towards the latter half of the weekend. Otherwise, conditions will remain hot and humid, with above-average temperatures expected through Sunday. Russell Graphics are available at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
