Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 306 PM EDT Sat Sep 24 2022 Valid 00Z Sun Sep 25 2022 - 00Z Tue Sep 27 2022 ...Recent record heat coming to an end across the Central/Southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi... ...Below average temperatures to spread from the Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley, while much above average temperatures spread across the West... ...Rains from Ian to push northward into South Florida on Monday... The recent period of record high temperatures across the Central to Southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley will be coming to an end in response to a southward moving cold front pushing across the Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley regions this weekend into early next week. This front is being driven by an increasingly amplified mid to upper level pattern across the nation, with a deep trof stretching from eastern Canada into the Northeast and a building upper ridge from the Southwest into the Northern Rockies. In addition to bringing cooler temperatures to portions of the south, the above mentioned front will also spread below average temperatures east southeastward from the Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley Sunday and Monday, and across the remainder of the East by mid week. In the wake of this front moving through the Great Lakes, active lake effect rain showers are likely Sunday into Monday downwind of all of the Great Lakes as cold air will be moving over the warm lakes. While temperatures cool down across the east over the next few days, they will be heating up across much of the West in response to the amplifying upper ridge. Much above average temperatures expected across most of the West into next week, with a few record highs possible by Monday across the coastal Pacific Northwest. The amplified upper trof stretching from eastern Canada into the East will also help to draw Ian northwestward over the next few days from the Caribbean toward western Cuba and eventually into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Rainfall ahead of Ian may begin to affect South Florida on Monday. Additional impacts from Ian likely across Florida through much of next week as the official storm track from the National Hurricane Center pushes the storm northward through the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
