Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 336 AM EDT Wed Oct 19 2022 Valid 12Z Wed Oct 19 2022 - 12Z Fri Oct 21 2022 ...Record breaking cold to impact the Southeast through Thursday; warm air in Northwest spreads into Great Plains... ...Freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect from portions of the Southern/Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic... The main weather story during the short range period will be the ongoing record cold that is impacting the southeastern quadrant of the country. High pressure over the Plains and Mississippi Valley paired with a departing trough off of the East Coast will keep cool northerly winds flowing into the eastern half of the country. This cold setup will allow for the potential for record high temperatures across the Florida peninsula today and record lows in much of the Southeast tonight as clear skies allow temperatures to dive to right around freezing overnight. The frigid conditions will also warrant Freeze warnings and frost advisories to span from the panhandle of Texas/Oklahoma to the East Coast. Many areas in the Southeast and central Gulf Coast will likely experience their first freeze of the season which will impact sensitive crops and livestock. Meanwhile, the heavy rain threat in Maine should wrap up this morning as a potent cold front providing the focus for precipitation moves into the Canadian maritime. Farther upstream, light rain/snow showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue over the Great Lakes today, and slowly diminish over the next couple of days. Ridging in the Northwest will continue the warm trend in the region today before spreading east into the Northern Plains on Thursday. High temperatures will be 15-25 degrees above average for many parts of the Northwest and Northern Plains over the next two days. Warm, dry and windy conditions will warrant a critical fire weather risk over much of central and eastern Montana on Thursday. Red flag warnings are in effect for the Wyoming/Colorado Front Range. A new system enters the Pacific Northwest on Friday, and brings with it the chance for unsettled weather to the West this weekend.
