Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 402 AM EDT Sat Nov 05 2022 Valid 12Z Sat Nov 05 2022 - 12Z Mon Nov 07 2022 ...Atmospheric River will continue to bring widespread rain and high elevation snow to the Pacific Northwest today... ...Strong winds and wintry precipitation across the Northwestern U.S. with a cold front passage this weekend... ...Moderate to Heavy mountain snow possible in the Cascades and northern/central Rockies today and Sunday and Sierra Nevada Monday... ...Above normal temperatures in the eastern U.S. and below normal temperatures in the western U.S. through early next week... A frontal system continues to move across the central U.S. early this morning while gradually approaching the eastern U.S. Severe thunderstorms will continue to be possible across the Southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley early this morning, but severe potential will gradually decrease throughout the day today. This system is forecast to continue slowly moving east while weakening through early next week. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible ahead of and along the cold front, and rain chances associated with this system are forecast to steadily decrease through Monday. Another frontal system is on the doorstep of the Pacific northwest where an atmospheric river has been bringing widespread precipitation over the past couple days. A cold front is forecast to move southeast across the region today, pushing the atmospheric river south towards northern California. Rain and mountain snow will continue across the region as the front moves through, but precipitation rates will be less than in previous days. Still, additional rainfall could exacerbate flooding concerns in areas that have received considerable rainfall this week, and Flood Watches are in effect through this morning for portions of Washington and northern Oregon west of the Cascades. Moderate to Heavy mountain snow will also be possible for higher elevations in the Cascades and northern/central Rockies. The cold front in the northwestern U.S. will pass the Pacific Northwest and northern/central Rockies and High Plains today, then surge southeast into the central U.S. and further south across the western U.S. on Sunday. A second system will approach the Northwest on Sunday and follow behind the leading cold front through Monday. A tightening pressure gradient across the region today will result in strong winds, and High Wind Warnings are in effect for areas from central Washington/Oregon to eastern Montana/Wyoming. Blowing snow may be of concern where snow fell this week. Wintry precipitation is also forecast for much of the Northwest as these systems roll through. Heavy mountain snow will be possible through Monday for parts of the Cascades, northern/central Rockies, and Sierra Nevada mountains, and Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect. The eastern U.S. will experience above normal temperatures and mild conditions through the weekend into early next week thanks to southerly flow and persistent high pressure ridging. High temperatures are forecast to range from the upper 60s to the lower 80s each day. Meanwhile, temperatures will swing the other way in the west with below normal temperatures expected in the wake of the cold fronts. Temperatures will likely reach 15-20 degrees below normal in some areas by Monday and cold air moves in from the north.
