Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 254 AM EST Sun Nov 06 2022 Valid 12Z Sun Nov 06 2022 - 12Z Tue Nov 08 2022 ...Elevated Fire Weather conditions through Monday in the Upper Midwest and northern/central Plains due to strong winds and low humidity... ...Moderate to Heavy mountain snow expected in the Cascades, northern/central Rockies, and Sierra Nevada... ...Above normal temperatures continue in the eastern U.S. through Monday... ...Below normal temperatures in the western U.S. and above normal temperatures in the central U.S. expected by mid-week... Two low pressure systems are tracking across southern Canada, each with a trailing cold front draped across the continental U.S. The leading system is just north of the Great Lakes region and will move north-northeast away from the region today. The trailing cold front associated with this system has been gradually weakening as it approaches the eastern U.S. and is expected to stall along the Appalachian mountains by this afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected ahead of and along the frontal boundary today. Southerly flow ahead of the front and high pressure ridging extending along the east coast will support the continuation of above normal temperatures today and Monday. The second low pressure system will move east across southern Canada and push a dry cold front across the central U.S. today and eastern U.S. Monday. Behind the cold front, high pressure will build and cold, dry air will filter in from the north. The pressure gradient will tighten over the northern/central Plains and Upper Midwest between the low pressure center and developing high pressure, and strong winds will develop across the region. Wind Advisories and High Wind Warning are in effect through this evening. Strong winds and low humidity will also result in increased fire danger, and the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted Elevated fire weather conditions today and Monday across portions of South Dakota east into the Minnesota River Valley and south into northeastern Iowa and northern Nebraska. Widespread Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches are in effect. Cooler air will shift eastwards as the front progresses, and temperatures across the eastern U.S. will return to near normal on Tuesday. In the West, a cold front will continue to move south today and another cold front will move southeast across the region Monday and Tuesday. These two systems will produce widespread winter weather at mid and high elevations, and moderate to heavy mountain snow is expected in portions of the Cascades, northern/central Rockies, and Sierra Nevada mountains. As a result, Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect. Cold air will spread south across the West behind the frontal systems, and temperatures will trend downwards through mid-week. High temperatures will drop to 15-20 degrees below normal in some areas. While the West cools down, the central U.S. will begin to warm as southerly flow develops mid-week. Dolan Graphics are available at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
