Periods of heavy lake effect snow will wind down downwind of the Great Lakes tonight. Additional accumulations of 2-4" are expected downwind of lakes Michigan, Huron, Superior and Erie, while up to a foot and a half of snow is possible with locally higher amounts downwind of lake Ontario through tonight. Gusty winds and bouts of lighting may cause hazardous driving conditions across upstate New York today. Heavy snow should taper off by Monday morning when winds are expected to pick up again with the arrival of another low pressure system over northern/central Ontario. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for parts of the eastern UP and western Michigan. Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories continue for downwind areas of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Elsewhere, surface high pressure over much of the lower 48 will generate below average temperatures for portions of the East and South today before things begin moderating a bit across the rest of the country. Light winds and dry conditions will produce poor air quality over much of the Pacific Northwest early this week. Hard Freeze and Freeze Warnings are in effect for some of the mountains and valleys of southern and central California, while Red Flag Warnings are in effect for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties through this morning. A stationary front draped between Florida and Cuba will be the focus for thunderstorm activity over southern Florida for the next few days.
