Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 256 AM EST Mon Dec 26 2022 Valid 12Z Mon Dec 26 2022 - 12Z Wed Dec 28 2022 ...A clipper system will deliver snow across the Northern Plains to the Midwest through into Monday... ...Lingering lake-effect snows downwind from Great Lakes will slowly become less intense... ...Increasingly stormy weather with heavy mixed precipitation expected to impact the West Coast next couple of days before spreading into Rockies... ...Arctic air enveloping much of the eastern half of the U.S. will be slow to moderate... Bands of heavy lake-effect snow have persisted within the persistent west/northwest winds on the backside of the low pressure system over southeastern Canada. The system is expected to move further from Canada as an Alberta clipper tracks quickly across the northern tier states into Monday. With the clipper system snow will spread across the Northern Plains and the Midwest as well as a reinforcing shot of cold Canadian air. Much of the eastern U.S. will remain in a deep freeze through Monday before a moderating trend sets in on Tuesday. Lake-effect snows will continue to result in locally hazardous travel conditions for the next couple of days but conditions are expected to slowly improve as we head into the last week of 2022. The western U.S. will be transitioning to a more active, stormy pattern as a series of fast-moving low pressure systems move inland and track through the Intermountain West spreading mixed precipitation across portions of the Northwest and California. By Tuesday, a much stronger low pressure system is forecast to bring an even more potent surge of moisture into the Pacific Northwest and farther south into California. A few inches of rainfall is possible down the West Coast into central California by Tuesday where the potential threat for local flash flooding will continue to be monitored. Very strong winds will become a concern as well on Tuesday in these areas, especially near the coast and at higher elevations as the center of this potent low is forecast to reach coastal Washington later on Tuesday.
