Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 252 AM EST Tue Feb 07 2023 Valid 12Z Tue Feb 07 2023 - 12Z Thu Feb 09 2023 ...Heavy snow over parts of the Cascades and Northern Intermountain Region on Tuesday... ...There is a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall over the Southern Plains into the Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday; There is a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley on Wednesday... ...Snow over parts of the Northern/Central Rockies and the Middle/Upper Mississippi Valley; Pockets of rain/freezing rain over parts of the Northeast... Onshore flow off the Pacific will produce coastal rain and higher-elevation snow over the Pacific Northwest through Wednesday. The snow will be heavy over the Cascades and parts of the Northern Intermountain Region through Wednesday morning. Associated upper-level energy will move onshore over the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday evening and move southeastward to the Central Rockies by Thursday. The energy will create light snow over the Cascades, Northern Intermountain Region, and the Northern/Central Rockies through Thursday. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, low pressure over Lake Superior will move northeastward into the Canadian Maritimes by Thursday. Moisture will stream northward over the Mississippi Valley into the Upper Midwest. On early Tuesday morning, snow will develop over parts of the Upper Great Lakes. By Tuesday evening, rain and snow will develop over parts of northern New York State and New England. Patches of rain/freezing rain will develop along the rain/snow line over the region. By Wednesday morning, light snow will fall over parts of Northern New England. The snow will result in reduced visibility/hazardous driving conditions and ice may cause dangerous road conditions, too. In the meantime, showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain will develop over parts of the Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley. Therefore, the WPC has issued a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley through Wednesday morning. The associated heavy rain will create mainly localized areas of flash flooding, with urban areas, roads, and small streams the most vulnerable. The storms will be strong to severe thunderstorms over parts of the Western Gulf Coast. Therefore, the SPC has issued a Marginal Risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Western Gulf through Wednesday morning. The hazards associated with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts, a few tornadoes, and a minimal threat of hail. On Wednesday, the excessive rainfall moves slightly northeastward to Arkansas and Missouri. Therefore, the WPC has issued a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley from Wednesday into Thursday morning. The associated heavy rain will create mainly localized areas of flash flooding, with urban areas, roads, and small streams the most vulnerable. The threat of severe thunderstorms increases on Wednesday over Louisiana and Mississippi. Therefore, the SPC has issued a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley from Wednesday into Thursday morning. The hazards associated with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts, hail, and a few tornadoes. Furthermore, a front over the Northwest will move eastward to the Upper Midwest to the Southern High Plains by Thursday. The system, in combination with the storm producing excessive rainfall and severe thunderstorms, will produce snow over parts of the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley overnight Wednesday into Thursday. Similarly, the systems will produce rain over parts of the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes. Ziegenfelder Graphics available at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
