Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 AM EDT Fri Aug 25 2023 Valid 12Z Fri Aug 25 2023 - 12Z Sun Aug 27 2023 ...Dangerous heat continues from the Midwest to Gulf Coast, with relief finally on the way for some by this weekend... ...Excessive Rainfall leading to Flash Flooding possible across portions of the Central High Plains today... A very dangerous heat wave will persist for just one more day across the Midwest today before retreating into the Gulf Coast this weekend. The upper-level ridge, which supports this anomalous warmth across the Mississippi Valley and Midwest will retract toward the Great Plains and western U.S. this weekend. In the meantime, high temperatures in the upper 90s to 100s will tie or break existing records from the Midwest down to the Gulf Coast states today, with the highest concentration of record rivaling temps occurring over the Lower Mississippi Valley and east Texas through the end of the weekend. A cold front will provide relief to much of the Upper Midwest today and Saturday to the Middle Mississippi Valley. Widespread record low minimum temperatures are also expected from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast during this period due in part to increased cloud cover overnight from the aforementioned cold front. Do not underestimate the potential for heat-related illness--have a way to break your heat exposure, coold down, and stay hydrated! Shortwave energy, associated with the remnants of Harold embedded within the upper ridge centered over the Southern Plains, will trigger scattered shower and thunderstorm activity over parts of the Central/Southern Rockies and Great Plains this afternoon and evening.
