Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 AM EDT Sat Aug 26 2023 Valid 12Z Sat Aug 26 2023 - 12Z Mon Aug 28 2023 ...Dangerous heat continues across the Gulf Coast this weekend... A relatively quiet period is in store for the CONUS this weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to focus around a cold front dropping through the Middle Mississippi Valley and Tennessee Valley today. Temperatures in the Midwest are likely to cool down on the backside of this cold front after a blistering week of dangerously record setting temperatures. Unfortunately, extreme heat and abnormally high overnight temperatures will persist in the South out ahead of the cold front through this weekend. Widespread record high and low temperatures are likely to be tied or broken across the Gulf Coast this weekend. Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are currently in effect from central Texas to the Florida Panhandle and up through the Lower Mississippi Valley. Heat of this intensity poses a health risk to anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Do not underestimate the potential for heat-related illness--have a way to break your heat exposure, cool down and stay hydrated. Shortwave energy embedded within the Southwest ridge will trigger rounds of storms and scattered heavy rainfall over the Carolinas on Sunday. A large upper low stationed offshore from the Pacific Northwest and a building ridge over the Rockies will support above average temperatures across the West through early next week. The quiet period may come to an end early next week as a retreating ridge from the Southeast gives way to the ascent of subtropical moisture into the Florida peninsula and the Southeast.
