Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 201 AM EDT Sat Nov 04 2023 Valid 12Z Sat Nov 04 2023 - 12Z Mon Nov 06 2023 ...Modest atmospheric river activity to bring multiple rounds of beneficial precipitation across the Pacific Northwest and the Northern Rockies this weekend into early next week... ...Most of the country experiences modest warmth this weekend before cool Pacific air enters through the West... Persistent troughing over the Pacific Northwest will generate moderate to locally heavy precipitation across much of the Northwest this weekend into early next week. The first round of precip will be almost completely in the form of rain (save for highest mountain peaks) across the Washington and Oregon coasts today. Isolated instances of heavy rainfall over the Olympics and coastal ranges of southern Oregon into northern California will support a Marginal Risk of Flash Flooding as a result. The next round of precip arrives late Sunday afternoon and carries with it another Marginal Risk of Flash Flooding over the immediate coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest, partly due to high soil moisture caused by recent heavy rain. Moisture from this atmospheric river activity is expected to spread into the Northern Rockies in the form of snow showers this weekend. Relatively zonal flow across much of the country will support above average temperatures this weekend, while shortwave energy moving through the Southeast will lead to average to below average temperatures. The upper trough responsible for atmospheric river activity over the Pacific Northwest this weekend will bring cool Pacific air into the West by early next week.
