Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 248 PM EST Fri Nov 17 2023 Valid 00Z Sat Nov 18 2023 - 00Z Mon Nov 20 2023 ...Unsettled weather expands across the West... ...Great Plains warms up while the West cools down... A southern stream trough will phase with its northern stream counterpart as it enters the West from the Pacific this weekend. This amplifying mid-level trough will support widespread rain showers and high elevation snow across much of the West. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will expand across the state of California tonight while heavy snow develops over the Sierra Nevada. The focus for rain and snow expands into the Pacific Northwest on Saturday as a deep low pressure system emerges over the region. There is up to a 40% chance of 8" of snow falling over parts of the Sierra that day. The Cascades will receive much of its snow between Saturday and Sunday with estimates at around 6-12" for the mountain range by Monday morning. Much of the moisture associated with this system will spread into the Intermountain West and Rockies on Sunday where additional snow will occur. Parts of the Northeast coast will experience near-to-record breaking warm low temperatures tonight, as cloudy conditions prevent surfaces from radiating warm daytime temperatures out. The Southwest will also experience warm low temperatures tonight, before a cool airmass moves in on Saturday. Temperatures climb over the Great Plains beneath an area of high pressure and out ahead of an approaching mid-level trough. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will proliferate across the Southern/Central Plains and Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley on Sunday, while the western trough digs into the Rockies.
