Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 210 PM EST Tue Nov 21 2023 Valid 00Z Wed Nov 22 2023 - 00Z Fri Nov 24 2023 ...East Coast holiday travel disruptions likely Tuesday night into Wednesday. Much better travel conditions across much of the remainder of the nation... ...A white Thanksgiving on tap for portions of Northern New York State, Northern New England and the Northern Rockies... ...Much colder temperatures sink southward into the Northern Plains/Northern Rockies on Thanksgiving... The widespread precipitation event currently ongoing across the eastern quarter of the nation will continue to have potential holiday travel impacts Tuesday night into Wednesday as the storm system and frontal boundaries responsible for the inclement weather continue to push eastward. Widespread heavy rains are likely from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday across the east, bringing some much needed rains to to areas from the Appalachians, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast that have had much below average precipitation over the past several weeks. On the northern edge of this area of heavy precipitation, a white Thanksgiving is possible as accumulating snows are likely from northern New York State into northern New England, with the heaviest accumulations in excess of 6" possible from central to northern New Hampshire into northern Maine. Overall travel conditions will improve significantly by Thanksgiving across nearly all of the nation. Exceptions to this will be over the Northern Rockies and Northern High Plains where accumulating snows are possible beginning early Thursday and continuing into Thanksgiving day and along the coastal Pacific Northwest Wednesday and across far South Texas early Thursday, where light precipitation amounts are possible. Areas of the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains will also see much colder temperatures on Thanksgiving day as cold air from southern Canada surges southward. Temperatures are expected to be much above average across this region Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by much colder temperatures and the above mentioned snow threat for Thanksgiving Day. This colder than average air will continue to sink southward at the end of the week into this weekend across the Central Rockies and into the Central to Southern Plains. Cooler than average temperatures also likely across the southeast quarter of the nation on Thanksgiving, with these cooler than average temperatures then taking hold across much of the nation by this weekend, save for the immediate West coast and South Florida.
