An amplified upper-level low will continue generating showers and thunderstorms across much of the West Coast tonight. The heaviest rainfall is likely to focus along portions of California's north/central coasts and coastal ranges tonight. Some localized flash flooding is possible, especially along the primary band of storms and over the coastal ranges where upsloping will enhance rainfall totals. Heavy rain should begin to wane across the region later tonight and into Saturday morning when the upper trough will shift into the Great Basin. Heavy snow will begin across the Sierra later tonight into Saturday as snow levels drop over/behind the aforementioned upper trough. Meanwhile, a wintry mix is expected across parts of central New England while heavy snow occurs over northern Maine through Saturday. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for both the Sierra and northern Maine. New Years Eve (Sunday) will be quiet across the CONUS with some light snow showers possible for parts of Wisconsin and Michigan. Some light rain showers are also possible for parts of the California coast out ahead of an approaching low pressure system. Temperatures will continue to be well below average for the Southeast tonight and Saturday night following the passage of an arctic cold front yesterday (Thursday). Temperatures will bottom out in the upper 20s to low 30s for much of the Southeast into northern Florida during this period.
