Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 312 PM EDT Sun May 11 2025 Valid 00Z Mon May 12 2025 - 00Z Wed May 14 2025 ...Thunderstorms and heavy rain possible over parts of the Southeast then into the Mid-Atlantic... ...Record heat continues for the Northern Plains... ...Toasty Tuesday in Texas... A slow-moving storm system over the Southeast today will move slowly eastward/northeastward over the next two days. With a moisture feed from the south (Gulf into the Atlantic), locally heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible this evening/overnight and again Monday from the Florida Panhandle northward into Georgia and northeastward into the Carolinas. There is a Slight Risk (level 2 out of 4) of excessive rainfall through Tuesday for some areas -- flash flooding is possible within and near the risk area. Temperatures will be cool in the Southeast due to abundant cloud cover but will modify as the system exits the region. In the West, an incoming storm system will bring in some showers (snow for the higher mountain regions) and cool temperatures first over Washington/Oregon/Idaho/Northern California then into the Great Basin and Interior West. Ahead of the front, it will be fairly windy over much of the interior region into the deserts this evening and again on Monday. Some areas could see stronger winds (gusts over 50mph) tomorrow which could make for difficult driving for high profile vehicles. Rain and mountain snow will progress to the southeast on Tuesday into Utah and Wyoming. Warm/hot temperatures over the Southwest today will be replaced by temperatures 10-30 degrees cooler by Tuesday. Over the Northern Plains, hot/record high temperatures today will persist through Tuesday, along with windy/dry conditions. Red flag warnings are in effect for the rest of today (Sunday) as Elevated/Critical fire weather conditions remain in place. Temperatures will soar into the 90s to around 100F from the Dakotas into Minnesota which will break daily record high temperatures Monday and Tuesday. Moderate to Major HeatRisk levels are forecast for this region -- stay hydrated and out of the sun during the hottest part of the day. Farther south over Texas, mild temperatures today (70s/80s) and Monday (80s to low 90s) will rise further on Tuesday ahead of the western system. Widespread 100F readings are likely over much of the Lone Star state which may eclipse record values. HeatRisk values will increase into the Moderate category as the heat looks to continue past Tuesday. Fracasso Graphics available at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
