Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 341 AM EDT Fri Jun 13 2025 Valid 12Z Fri Jun 13 2025 - 12Z Sun Jun 15 2025 ...Heavy to Excessive Rainfall likely across portions of the east-central U.S. over the next couple of days... ...Heatwave expected for the Desert Southwest with highs reaching the 110s by this weekend... The main thing making weather headlines Friday and into the weekend will be the widespread coverage of showers and thunderstorms across much of the central and eastern U.S., with a particular focus across southeast Texas, the Mid-South, and portions of Virginia. Areas from the greater Chicago metro area to Washington D.C. will mark the general placement of a slow moving frontal boundary, and areas south of that will be in a warm and humid airmass with multiple weak disturbances aloft that will help to generate daily showers and thunderstorms. Multiple Slight Risk areas of excessive rainfall are in effect for portions of these areas on Friday, and Virginia also will have a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall on Saturday with slow moving showers and storms continuing near the Interstate 64 corridor. Another area of moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected across portions of the Upper Midwest, mainly over central Minnesota through midday Friday where 1 to 2 inches is currently forecast. This may be enough to result in some localized flooding issues, and WPC has a Marginal Risk of excessive rainfall for Friday to account for this, although the heaviest rainfall is expected prior to daybreak Friday. This will be the result of moisture from the south intersecting a frontal boundary paired with a mid-level shortwave disturbance moving through the region. Farther west across the western High Plains, scattered severe thunderstorms are forecast to develop on Friday from southern Montana to the Texas Panhandle as a mid-upper level shortwave tracks from the Pacific Northwest towards this region. It will continue to be quite warm and dry Friday and into the weekend across much of the interior Western U.S. as an upper level ridge governs the overall weather pattern. The most impactful heat will be across the lower elevations of the Desert Southwest where afternoon highs will reach 105 to 110 degrees through Friday, and then reaching the 110s over the weekend. Therefore, an extreme heat warning is now in effect across most of southern Arizona and into extreme southeast California as the heatwave builds. There are also some elevated fire weather concerns across portions of western Nevada, and also central Oregon and Washington on Friday owing to dry conditions and gusty winds. A cold front dropping southeast across the Pacific Northwest will result in an abatement of the ongoing heat and a return to more seasonable conditions for much of Washington and Oregon. The coolest areas in the country will be north of a frontal boundary across the northern Plains and Great Lakes areas, with refreshingly cool conditions and highs mainly in the 60s.
