After several days of active thunderstorms and torrential rains, resulting in catastrophic flooding across south-central Texas, some relief is in store during Tuesday. The ongoing active thunderstorms Monday afternoon will continue to pose life threatening flash flooding across south central Texas into this evening. However, by Tuesday, thunderstorm activity expected to be less active, with the primary area of scattered thunderstorms to the north of the recently hard hit areas of south-central Texas. Thunderstorms, however, will become more active this afternoon into tonight across large portions of the Central Plains, northeastward into the eastern portions of the Northern Plains. Severe weather is possible across these areas with winds the greatest severe weather risk, followed by large hail and a lesser threat of tornadoes. By Tuesday, the severe thunderstorm threat will shift southward into the Southern Plains, east into the Lower Missouri Valley and across much of the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition to the severe weather threat across the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday, the heavy rains from these storms will also pose a flash flood threat, especially in more urbanized regions. Temperature wise across the CONUS, much above average temperatures expected into Wednesday from the Southwest, across the Great Basin, Rockies and into the Northern to Central High Plains. Excessive heat watches and warnings are currently in effect across southeast California, southern and western Arizona and far southern Nevada, where high temperatures over the next few days are expected to eclipse 110 degrees. Heat advisories are also in effect across portions of the Northern Great Basin. The heat across the Northern Great Basin and Northern Rockies will begin to diminish on Wednesday as a strong front begins to move inland into the Northwest. At this time, the heat will shift eastward into the Central to Northern High Plains where high temperatures are expected in the upper 90s and lower 100s. Heat will also be building on Tuesday along a large portion of the East from Atlanta to Boston. Heat advisories have already been posted for coastal locations form eastern North Carolina into the Mid-Atlantic and eastern New England where heat risks are expected to be major on Tuesday. Slightly cooler temperatures by mid to late week will reduce the heat risks across these areas from Tuesday's major levels.
