Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 340 AM EDT Wed Oct 29 2025 Valid 12Z Wed Oct 29 2025 - 12Z Fri Oct 31 2025 ...Storm system to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms from the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys to the Northeast the next couple of days... ...Much cooler, well below average temperatures for much of the eastern/central U.S.... A lingering coastal low along the Carolinas/Mid-Atlantic will continue to bring some showers along with the threat for minor to moderate coastal flooding and some gusty winds. Meanwhile, reinforcing upper-energy will dig an upper-trough/developing upper-low further south across the Mississippi Valley and into the Southeast Wednesday, helping to deepen/organize a low pressure/frontal system over the region. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected along the northeastward track of the low pressure through the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys and the central/southern Appalachians during the day and into the Mid-Atlantic by Wednesday night. Moderate to locally heavy rainfall may lead to some isolated flash flooding concerns, especially along the more sensitive terrain of the Upper Tennessee/Ohio Valleys and the central/southern Appalachians. The system will continue northeastward on Thursday, with showers and thunderstorms continuing for the Mid-Atlantic while spreading into New England. Once again moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected, with an isolated flash flood threat focused over portions of the northern Mid-Atlantic/greater NYC area where heavy rainfall chances may be enhanced as the lingering coastal low tracks northward and inland. The digging upper-trough and surging cold front will also help to reinforce a colder, well below average air mass across much of the eastern and central U.S., especially along the southern tier. Widespread highs in the 50s and 60s are expected for all but the Florida Peninsula and south Texas, though even temperatures here will have plummeted into the 70s after multiple days in the mid-90s. Morning lows will also be rather chilly, with 40s as far south as portions of the Gulf Coast. Widespread Frost and Freeze-related advisories are in effect across much of the central and southern High Plains as lows drop into the low 30s. Gusty winds are also expected across much of the central/southern Plains to Lower Mississippi Valley as northerly winds strengthen behind the deepening low pressure system to the east. Elsewhere, some spotty light precipitation may linger into Wednesday across portions of the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies following the passage of a system on Tuesday, with lower elevation rain and higher elevation mountain snow. Passing upper-waves may also bring some light showers to the northern Plains/Upper Midwest the next couple of days. In contrast to the east, an upper-ridge over the western U.S. will continue to bring well above average, mild to hot temperatures through mid-week. Highs across the Pacific Northwest, Great Basin, and Rockies will be in the 50s and 60s, with 70s and 80s into northern/central California. Highs will be into the 80s and 90s across the Desert Southwest as well as into southern California, where Heat Advisories remain in effect.
