A highly amplified upper-trough centered near the Ohio Valley will maintain an influx of unseasonably cold continental polar air, which is forecast to threaten many temperature records over the Deep South, Lower Mid-Atlantic, and Florida Peninsula through tomorrow. Accordingly, a swath of Freeze Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories extend across these areas where temperatures should be on average 20-30 degrees below normal. Meanwhile, fire weather concerns across the Southeast and Northern Gulf Coast should wane this evening with the approach of the surface high pressure center, before shifting into the Southern Plains tomorrow amid dry downsloping winds. The northwesterly flow supplying cold air across the Midwest and interior Northeast will also generate snowfall for portions of the Great Lakes and Appalachians today, where an additional 4-8" are expected with isolated higher amounts possible by Wednesday morning. Lake Effect Snow Warnings remain in effect downwind of Lake Erie, while Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories dot downwind areas of the Great Lakes, northern Maine and the Central/Southern Appalachians. In the West, a low pressure system is still on track to usher in an atmospheric river centered over Southern Oregon and Northern/Central California late Wednesday, although much of the precipitation looks to fall beyond the forecast period. While forecast specifics will become more apparent in the coming day, users are encouraged to stay tuned as isolated flooding and heavy elevation snowfall are possible with this upcoming system.
