Probabilistic Heavy Snow and Icing Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 429 AM EDT Wed Oct 23 2019 Valid 12Z Wed Oct 23 2019 - 12Z Sat Oct 26 2019 ...Rocky Mountains and Southern High Plains... Days 1-3... A mid-level trough will dig south down the Rocky Mountains through Thursday. There is only good model agreement on movement of this trough through Wednesday night. On Thursday (Day 2) the ejection of this trough east becomes much faster in the 00Z GFS and then through Thursday night the CMC is the slowest while the ECMWF is a little faster. Preference is given to the 00Z ECMWF. Light to moderate snow can be expected over south-central and WY higher terrain today. Rates increase with heavy snow expected for the CO Rockies tonight and the northern NM Rockies Thursday as the dynamics increase with the digging trough. The jet streak pushing south into the Northwest increases from around 130kt this morning to over 150kt this evening over MT and WY. WPC probabilities are high for 8 inches in the highest terrain of the Rockies and Sangre De Cristos, with low probabilities for 4 inches extending into the High Plains. Snow the continues through Thursday night as a comma head develops. This should spread light snow across the TX Panhandle where there are low to moderate WPC probabilities for two inches. The probability of significant icing is less than 10 percent. Jackson
