Probabilistic Heavy Snow and Icing Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 514 PM EDT Thu Apr 02 2020 Valid 00Z Fri Apr 03 2020 - 00Z Mon Apr 06 2020 ...Northern Plains/Upper Midwest to the Mid Mississippi Valley/Central Plains and Rockies... Day 1 (ending 00Z Sat)... A well-defined shortwave moving east of the northern High Plains will continue to push a sharp cold front east into the upper and mid Mississippi valley. Favorable upper jet forcing is expected to support additional light to moderate snows across eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota through the evening into the overnight hours, with WPC PWPF indicating that additional amounts of 4-inches or more are likely along and east of the Red River. Meanwhile, a wintry mix will advance farther east across Minnesota, with WPC PWPF continuing to show high probabilities for ice accumulations of 0.10 to 0.25 inch across portions of central Minnesota. Models also show favorable upper forcing supporting a second area of organized precipitation farther to the south across the central Plains into the lower Missouri and mid Mississippi valleys on Friday. Here too a wintry mix may produce impactful ice accumulations across portions of eastern Nebraska and Kansas into western Iowa and northern Missouri. Day 2 (ending 00Z Sun)... As the supporting shortwave begins to lift north from the upper Midwest into Canada, light rain changing to a wintry mix is expected to result in mainly light snow and ice accumulations from eastern Iowa to the U.P. of Michigan late Friday into Saturday. ...Pacific Northwest and Northern California... Days 2-3 (ending 00Z Mon)... Heavy snow is expected to return to the region as a deepening upper low approaches the coast Saturday night. By Sunday, heavy mountain snows are expected to become likely from the northwestern California ranges to the northern Sierra, with WPC PWPF indicating locally heavy accumulations of a foot or more likely by late Sunday.
